Bear Hug Brawl spotlights jayvee play

Brawl at BHS Saturday

By Robert Howey

The Lancaster County high school football spotlight will be on the county’s four junior varsity football teams at the fourth annual Bear Hug Brawl Junior Varsity Kickoff on Saturday, Aug. 22 at Buford High School’s Jackets Stadium.

The jayvee football jamboree is played in memory of Seth Muennich, the late Buford High School junior varsity football player who died in an auto accident near the school four years ago.

Jamboree proceeds benefit Seth’s Giving Tree, the Seth Muennich Foundation, which was begun in memory of the late Junior Jackets’ football player.

"This might be our best jamboree yet," said Lisa Muennich, Seth’s mother. "The weather for Saturday is looking good and we’re hoping for a good turnout.

"Things seem to be falling into place and we’ve had a lot of positive feedback," Muennich said. "Our sponsorships have increased each year since we started.
"We want it to grow and do as much as we can for the community," she said.

Angels among us .. Seth’s Hope spreads Christmas love

It might be winter, but Seth’s Giving Tree continues to flourish. The foundation is nourished by Christmas love of an angel tree that unites young people and reaches out to needy families in the Buford community.

Dubbed Seth’s Hope in honor of the late Seth Muennich, who was tragically killed in September 2011, the angel tree ministered to 53 families and 99 children this Christmas, up from 37 children the previous year.

The coincidence of helping that many families wasn’t lost on Seth’s mom, Lisa Muennich. Some coincidences, she said, are just too hard to explain; Seth wore No. 53 for the Buford High School junior varsity football team.

"Imagine that," Lisa said.

Cherished Jersey Becomes Healing Gift

College football headlines are dominated in this day and age by stories that highlight the cheating scandals, arrests and the greed that seem to be symptoms of the world we live in.

Take heart college football fans – there are still good people in the game we love, and people can find hope and a sliver of something good, even in a tragedy.

This is a story about two young men who never met. Two young football players who shared a number, a love of Clemson and a love of the game of football, and it is the selflessness of one and the love of family and friends for another that make this story what it is. It is the story of how a tragedy brought two families together, and how one of those families is using the memory of a cherished loved one to provide a brighter day for a hopeful college student.
